When to remove painter’s tape?
Not every painter’s tape is the same and there are quite a few differences in quality. The moment when you need to remove the painter’s tape therefore varies. The higher the quality of the tape, the easier it is to remove.
It is important, however, that you always do this within the time indicated on the packaging. Because even if you leave high-quality masking tape in place for too long, the chance of glue and tape residue remaining behind is high.
How to remove masking tape
The easiest way to remove masking tape is immediately after your paint job is finished, when the paint is still wet. Gently pull the tape off at a 45-degree angle without using too much force. Do you use too much force? Then there is a good chance that the tape will tear.
Can you leave painter’s tape in place?
Some painter’s tapes can be left in place between paint jobs. This saves you the time of removing and reapplying it. Whether you can leave your tape in place between jobs depends entirely on the quality of the tape and the conditions in which you paint. Are you painting outside, for example? - Did you accidentally leave tape in place? Forgot to remove a piece? No problem! It can be annoying, but fortunately there are ways to still be able to remove the tape. Dampen the tape with warm water and then remove the tape. The warm water will make the tape come off much easier.
- Is moistening the tape no use and the tape stays in place? Then use benzene to remove the tape. It is important not to use thinner or turpentine, as this can damage the paint layer. Petroleum ether also works for removing glue residue from masking tape.
